The living space in a one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartment is more than enough to fully meet the needs of one or two persons - especially if we are talking about a holiday property.

According to the NSI and the census as of 30.12.2020, 295,199 of Bulgarians in the cities live in one-bedroom properties and 1,002,976 - in two-bedroom apartments. As you can imagine, most of them do not live alone and raise one or more children in their apartments.

And since we already know that it is possible, we should explain now how it can be also as comfortable, pleasant, and cozy!

Tips for the interior design of a small apartment

If you have 40 or 50 sq.m. living space, you can meet the needs of your family relatively calmly and organize well-arranged living space.

When you have a small place, it will be a good idea to use the services of an interior designer to maximize the functionality of the space you have.

Here are some tips to help you arrange the space around you wisely:

  1. There is no room for clutter, so before you start thinking about how to make your one-bedroom apartment look like a two-bedroom, you need to get rid of all the unnecessary things that just take up space.

  2. Allocate the space according to your specific needs. Make a plan and start with the most urgent tasks - a children's room with a bunk bed, a comfortable sofa bed in the living room, a functional kitchen area, etc.

  3. Carefully measure the space. Use the terrace, if you have one, you can adapt it as a children's play area or a small office where you can enjoy solitude.

  4. Choose the minimalist design. Don't indulge in over-decorating, but integrate your ideas into a modern, clean design that makes the most of every square centimeter.

  5. Place the furniture next to the walls. This way they will not become an obstacle that you have to go around or jump over. At the same time, the property will look more spacious than it actually is.

  6. Choose semi- or open furniture. Instead of drawers and cabinets that make the home look shabby, choose bookshelves or bedside tables that are partially open because they create a feeling of space.

  7. Use mirrors to create an optical illusion. This will make the room look bigger and create a feeling of space. Whether it's adding them to the bathroom, bedroom, living room, the effect of the reflective surfaces is impressive.

  8. Choose highlights and pieces of the furniture that will stand out - for example, a bed cover, a retro sofa, an impressive lighting fixture. Something or things that will create comfort, focus, and a sense of space without overloading the interior.

  9. Choose furniture with legs, not with a solid body to the ground. In this way, you will manage the white space and it will work for the feeling of more space.

  10. Use different levels for the different corners of the room - this way you will separate them in a natural way, and the place will look cozy, tidy, and spatially justified.

  11. Use a multifunctional bed-bedroom - one that can be raised to the wall, converted into a wardrobe, drawer, etc. In this way, you will have the freedom to model in motion the vision and space of your home.

  12. Use furniture that has built-in storage - from benches or ottomans to bed frames. So the place will really be fully utilized.

  13. Choose neutral colors - light but definitely not very bright tones will make your apartment wide, spacious, and cozy.

  14. Use long curtains and drapes. This way you will visually create depth of the property, and you can safely use them to separate the individual corners.

  15. Depending on your specific needs and desires, a great idea will be to use furniture made to order and size, so as to use the space in the most functional way.

Every home needs space, and we must learn to manage it so that it serves us well so it becomes a great place to live with our family and children.

Because sometimes when furnishing a small property it is not so important what cards you have, but how you will be able to play them to your advantage.
