Flat and gable roofs: definition, applications, specifics03/11/21

When we talk about roof types, there are a number of divisions that could be made by different criteria. There are soft and hard roofs, roofs with dozens of different coatings, flat and pitched roofs, as well as various subdivisions in the larger groups of flat and pitched roofs.

Today in the Atlantis Estates blog we are talking about flat and gable roofs - what are they, when and where are they most often used, what are their most important advantages and disadvantages for the construction and the end-user.

Flat roof

Flat roofs are the most common solution in the high-rise construction of various types of residential, business, administrative, industrial, or commercial buildings of the latest generation.

These roof types have a flat surface with specially designed drainage, heat, and waterproofing. They are characterized by an easy and budget installation, combined with high durability and excellent efficiency.

Depending on the nature of the project, the flat roof can be both unusable (not designed to withstand additional loads) and usable - suitable for the construction of terraces, parking lots, green areas, restaurants, or sports grounds on top of the building.

The advantages of the flat roof can be systematized as follows:

  • It is smaller in area, requires less material, and is, therefore, faster and cheaper to install;

  • The modern materials for flat roofs have high water resistance, thus they extend the life of the structure;

  • Unlike pitched roofs, flat roofs can be used fully and intelligently: as a garden, parking lot or relaxation area;

  • The flat roof repairs are less frequent and much easier.

  • Flat roofs are highly resistant to stormy winds and adverse climate, without changing their shape, appearance, and qualities.

Last but not least - the fences and railings of the flat roofs can be synchronized with the architectural design of the building, so an additional aesthetic effect could be achieved.

Gable roof

The gable roofs are most often used in the building of single-family and multi-family houses or other types of low-rise buildings with tourist or residential applications. These are the sloping structures that we are used to thinking of them as a "traditional" looking roof.

Their application is extremely broad in the planning and construction of the buildings in the mountain resorts, due to the heavy snowfall and the possibility of the snow and the damp to flow down naturally.

The gable roof suggests the presence of a buffer attic, which serves as additional insulation between the interior space and the outside environment. This can be both a potential advantage and a potential disadvantage - depending on the quality of workmanship and the materials used.

In the making of the pitched roofs are used qualitatively different materials in significantly larger quantities - they are harder and slower to apply, require more investment, and more regular specialized maintenance.

Some of the advantages of pitched roofs in the architecture of the house include:

  • The easier and natural drainage of damp and rainwater;

  • The slopes offer the opportunity to apply many types of coatings with a different appearance, qualities and price;

  • The buffer space between the sloped roof and the premises can be used as a warehouse or an attic interior space;

  • The additional airbag implies easier thermal insulation and potentially reduced consumption of thermal insulation materials.

At the end of the day, the choice between a flat and gable roof must correspond to the overall concept of the construction project: its aesthetics, functionality, execution, and maintenance.

The team of Atlantis Estates has an expert and logical approach to each of its construction and investment projects. Therefore, we choose the roof to be suitable for the type of construction, for the function of the building, for the specifics of the local climate, for the overall construction, and for the architectural planning of the building.

Because where the appraisal is high, the decisions are never accidental!
